Snowbird Services provides, among other services, a watchful eye on weatherization protection for Central Oregon homes. Keeping foundation vents closed in the winter and open in the summer are prime concerns.
Virtually all of the foundation vents installed since 1990 have problems that prevent the damper doors from staying securely closed. The problem is that the vent housing warps slightly when the concrete around it dries and the house begins to settle over it. With that slight misalignment, the dampers just don't stay closed. In areas of cold climate, those dampers need to be shut to create a dead-air space under the house to retain heat and seal out moisture. In the summer the vents need to be open to ensure air flow to control humidity. Since my Snowbird Services business consists of monitoring temporarily vacant properties, I HAD to find a way to keep those dampers closed. From that necessity arose invention.
